To promote design fabrication in the state, the Kerala Startup Mission has established two fab labs, one at Trivandrum and other at Kochi in association with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 2015. Following the same 20 mini fab labs were setup at 20 Engineering College in the State in 2018. The lists of colleges in which the mini fab labs are setup is attached as Annexure I. In 2021, a super fab lab has also been setup in association with MIT at Technology Innovation Zone, Kochi. The super fab lab is the first of its kind established outside USA by the MIT. Mini fab lab has been setup at Government polytechnic college, Palakkad also. Establishment of mini fab lab at CUSAT, Kozhikode, Kannur universities are in progress.
Various training programs and research activities are being conducted at the fab labs. The fab academy course of MIT is being conducted at the Trivandrum and Kochi fab labs since 2016.
